Why You Should Use Screencapture Software for Your Online Course (and When to Hit Record)

Back in 2012, when I created my first online course, I used a clunky, expensive piece of software — I think it was Camtasia or something like it. It worked, but it was far from simple or affordable. Fast-forward to today, and things have changed.

Screen recording software is now easy, powerful, and often completely free.

So, why should you use screencapture software in your course?

Here are a few good reasons:

  • To demonstrate how to use a tool or system step by step

  • To record slide presentations with your voice explaining the content

  • To show your screen as you map out ideas, workflows, or mindmaps

  • To make your course feel more personal and practical

When should you use it?

Whenever you want to show what you're doing instead of just talking about it. A two-minute screencast can save you a thousand words of explanation.

Free tools that get the job done:

For Windows:

  • Xbox Game Bar (Win + G) – built-in for recording apps

  • Clipchamp – simple screen + webcam recorder

  • OBS Studio – powerful, no watermark

For Mac:

  • Screenshot Toolbar (Cmd + Shift + 5) – built-in recorder

  • OBS Studio – great free alternative

  • Loom – screen + camera + audio (limited free plan)
